WEAVING THE RUG STORY
Kahhal Looms Night and day in Ancient Egypt are seen in the Cairo-based brand’s new collection with multidisciplinary creative Louis Barthélemy When a new rug collection comes along that has a unique aesthetic we stand up and take notice. Hence our interest in the capsule collection of rugs and tapestries by multidisciplinary artist and designer Louis Barthélemy for Cairo-based rug company Kahhal Looms. Comprising two handknotted rugs and two handmade tapestries, the designs portray Tutankhamun’s allegorical mask and celebrate the one-hundred year anniversary of the discovery of the young Pharaoh’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Upper Egypt.
The beautiful gold stripes of the ancient Egyptian’s mask, which are inlaid with coloured glass and gemstones, are depicted in boldly coloured repeat patterns that play with line and appear like optical illusions. The dark and light colourways were selected to represent the repetitive cycle of day and night in life. The two Radiating Masks rugs and the two Swirling Legacy tapestries each have a blue version with a hint of ivory and brights to bring to mind dark nights. In contrast, the brighter version of each design features yellows and pinks to evoke the radiant daylight of modern and ancient Egypt. With this collection Kahhal Looms continues to bring a modern edge into its heritage-inspired designs.
